Foreign Minister condemns brutal terror attack in Nice

Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand has condemned the brutal attack that took place in the French city of Nice, which has claimed over 80 lives with dozens more sustaining injuries, according to initial reports.

“My thoughts today are with all the relatives of the deceased and injured victims of the barbaric terrorist attack that occurred on the evening of the French national holiday, Bastille Day. That attack was directed towards all nations that strive for freedom and equality, at our common values. The security of Europe and its citizens is our most important challenge today and we must jointly confront those who fail to respect human lives and basic values that differ from theirs. Estonia will do its utmost to make the fight against terrorism more decisive and effective. We will stand alongside other countries and international organisations in this,” said the Foreign Minister.

“As we have been getting reports that Estonian citizens were among those injured in the attack, this tragedy indeed strongly affects us all. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will do everything to establish the facts regarding the affected Estonian citizens and residents and render assistance to those who need it. To this end, we have been cooperating with French national and local Nice authorities,” added the Foreign Minister.

Statement by President Jean-Claude Juncker following the attacks on Nice (15/07/2016)

I am deeply shocked and distressed by the horrible ordeal that has struck the beautiful town of Nice on this national holiday.

I would like to express my greatest solidarity with the victims, their families and all the French nationals grieving after this cowardly, heinous act of terror.

France can count on the European Commission to continue supporting it and the other members of the European Union in the fight against terrorism inside and outside our Union. Our determination will only be matched by our unity.
