Estonia opened Honorary Consulate in Hong Kong

On Tuesday, 22 February, Foreign Ministry Secretary General Alar Streimann and Estonian Ambassador to China Andres Unga opened the Estonian Honorary Consulate in Hong Kong. The Estonian honorary consul in Hong Kong is Matthew Lam Kin Hong.

Foreign Ministry Secretary General Alar Streimann stated that Hong Kong could be a gateway to mainland China for Estonian businesses. “With its European communication style, strong financial institutions, and safe legal environment, Hong Kong offers good opportunities for Estonian entrepreneurs interested in Asian markets,” said Secretary General Streimann. He said that Estonia’s new honorary consul can also help introduce Estonia to Chinese entrepreneurs.

The consular region of Honorary Consul Matthew Lam Kin Hong covers the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong. The honorary consulate is located at the address No. 9 Queen's Road Central, Suite 3101, 31/F, Hong Kong. Honorary Consul Matthew Lam Kin Hong is a lawyer, the honorary consul is active in the Hong Kong Supreme Court and in the Supreme Court of England and Wales. He is also a member of the Hong Kong and Great British law societies. In addition to his professional work, Matthew Lam Kin Hong is also involved in fashion wholesale and retail trade and real estate development and investment in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, and Singapore.

Secretary General Streimann and Ambassador Unga also met today with Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Andrew Wong Ho-yuen and Permanent Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Joshua Law Chi-kong. Topics discussed at the meeting were bilateral co-operation and opportunities to intensify communication between businesses.

Near the border of Hong Kong lies the city of Shenzhen, which has a population of 9 million and is one of the fastest growing cities in China. It is also an important information technology centre, where for example the headquarters of Huawei and ZTE are located.
